Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is excited to host the start line for the 2023 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships.
The discipline of Ocean Racing involves competitors paddling a predetermined distance, on surfski’s, in the open ocean or on open expanses of water, preferably in downwind conditions. Surf ski racing has been around for a long time, with its origins as part of lifesaving competition. The first world championships was held in 2013 in Portugal. 2023 marks the first time the event has come to Australia and also the first time the event has been held in one of the major “homes” of surf ski paddling.
The Perth coastline is renowned around the world as one of the best locations for downwind paddling, being home to one of the biggest ocean surf ski race “The Doctor” which is a channel crossing from Rottnest Island to Sorrento Beach.
The World Championship Course Start – Bathers Beach, Fremantle
Finish – Scarborough Beach
The course is a downwind race stretching 20km up the coast of Perth, starting in Bathers Beach, Fremantle finishing on shore at Scarborough Beach. The course is a beach start, with paddlers paddling out to sea for 1.8km and then turning north, paddling past the Fremantle Port. The course has been designed to not only start and finish in iconic locations but also to align almost perfectly with the Fremantle Doctor breezes which blow
-south-west direction.
