Australia’s First Licensed Beach

Fully licensed Freo beach an Australian first

WA has come of age with Australia’s first-ever liquor licence for alfresco beach dining granted to Bathers Beach House in Fremantle.

With sun lounges on Bathers Beach in front of the venue, people can now dine with their toes in the sand while enjoying a meal and a drink.

Bathers Beach House co-owner Anthony Unmack said it was a major feather in the cap for both the establishment and Fremantle.

“While Bathers Beach House has been the only absolute beachfront restaurant, bar and function space in Perth since we opened two years ago, we are now the first place in Australia licensed to extend our food and beverage service to the beach sand,” he said.

“Waiters come and take your order and deliver everything to you – given the location by the sea, it’s like a taste of paradise.

“Guests can enjoy the spectacle that is a sunset over the Indian Ocean with a full restaurant service on the beach.”

The City of Fremantle gave the original green-light for the beach lounges and deckchairs on Bathers Beach to create something unique – but it’s only now people can enjoy this added service.

“You can experience this in Europe and Asia and this move now brings us up to par with what is almost expected of an international destination,” Mr Unmack said.

“After the success and popularity of our beach lounges, , we were continually encountering questions about the beach becoming a fully serviced area.

“Locals love Bathers Beach and this will become another must-do WA experience for tourists.

“The beach lounges will provide a range of options, whether it’s a casual meal from our beach menu, sunset drinks, sunset dinners or an ideal location for a unique function.”

More than 20 lounges can be reserved on a daily basis, either in advance or when a guest arrives, if available.

The area is fully serviced with orders delivered to the lounges. As with all licensed areas, BYO is not permitted.

Mr Unmack said the fully licensed beach area would further define Fremantle’s identity and attract national, if not worldwide, attention.

“Our team continually keeps this area well-kept and, subsequently, it has become incredibly popular with couples, families and visitors to WA who have all enjoyed an afternoon on the beach lounges and at Bathers Beach.

“Think about the long-term effect this might have on tourism for Fremantle – photos of people wining and dining on the beach, particularly given the global nature of social media, will show off the area as a major attraction.

“It also enhances our ability to run events in that space because we now offer something that is not available anywhere else in Australia.”
